As a proud employee of the New Mexico historic sites, I often participate in special events in which many of us wear historic attire. There are moments when the sight of a historically dressed person in a very historic building can make you think you have traveled to another time.
This painting captures one of those moments when I spotted my friend and volunteer, Rick Garcia, silhouetted in the doorway of the
chapel at Fort Stanton Historic Site. Rick is a talented Cowboy Poet and
always thrills our visitors with his cowboy looks and his dramatic
poetry recitations.

In Lincoln, New Mexico in 1878, a young Englishman named John Henry Tunstall built a store and hired an orphaned teenager (who would come to be known as Billy the Kid) to work for him on his ranch. Tunstall's dreams were cut short when he was murdered by an opposing faction, igniting 3 years of violence known as the Lincoln County War. Tunstall was buried behind his adobe store where his dreams of success and riches ended before they'd begun.

Along the back road of Peter Hurd's Sentinel Ranch in
southeast New Mexico, stands an old adobe that we've always
referred to as Casa Domingo.
Michael (Peter's son) still speaks of how he used to stop by
Domingo's house as a child for biscuits and cold water served
in old mason jars.
Like many old Hondo Valley homes, the adobe is rapidly
returning to the earth, the plaster peeling like skin, the rafters
protruding like old bones. You will be missed, Casa Domingo.

"Tears at Red Willow Creek ~ Taos, NM"
This magical, natural wonder near my home in Alamogordo, New Mexico
has been a constant thread in the memories of my life. As a child, a trip
to White Sands was the highlight of a trip to visit my grandparents. We
built sand castles and rolled down the glistening dunes. As a teen, I came
for BBQs and birthday parties with friends. As an adult, I have
photographed my friends' engagement pictures here, helped my nephews
build their sand castles, watched the moonrise over the dunes on my 21st
birthday and spent some of my most peaceful and happy hours in this
timeless place.

"Tunstall's Missed Fortune ~ Lincoln, NM "
22 1/2 x 18 1/2" (Frame Size)
This outhouse behind the historic Montano Store in Lincoln, New Mexico, caught my attention one foggy morning in autumn. I had never inspected it very closely, suspecting it might be a rattlesnake condominium. But for the sake of art, I decided to get closer to check my perspective and dimensions.
None of the outhouses in Lincoln date back to the time of Billy the Kid, but I was still a bit surprised when I peeked inside the door of the outhouse and found that at some point, it had been made more tolerable by a piece of 1970's, mustard-yellow shag carpet on the seat!
On a visit to the Taos Pueblo, I was intrigued by ornaments on a simple
wooden cross that seemed to say, "someone here is missed every year at
Christmas."
The square bell tower is all that remains of the San Geronimo church, built in 1726 and destroyed in an uprising in 1846, when many of the puebloans lost their lives. Many generations of Spanish and American Indian peoples have been laid to rest within the cemetery walls near the gently flowing waters of Red Willow Creek.

"Georgia's Sunflowers ~ Ghost Ranch"
48 - ORO - 20
It is impossible for an artist to visit Georgia O'Keeffe's Ghost Ranch in Abiquiui, New Mexico without being inspired. The lines
and angles of this building's classic southwestern architecture seemed even more intriguing because of the obliquity of the shadows cast by the afternoon sun. Sometimes, you're just in the right place at the right time.
Although I usually try to keep my paintings true to life, I decided to replace the modern light fixture by the door with a skull as an homage to Georgia.
"Return to Earth ~ Domingo's Bones"
24" x 18" Oil on Canvas
Sometimes it can be more difficult to come up with a title for a painting
than it is to create the painting itself! Looking for inspiration, I researched
sand dunes and learned that there are four types of dunes at White Sands
National Park. One of the most common is the Barchan dune which has a
curved slipface and two horns extending downwind like the shape of a
horseshoe. The hard ridge and slipface of these dunes is a testament to
the constant movement of wind and sand. It's amazing what you can
learn when you try to name a painting!

The story behind the painting...
Behind this B&B south of Santa Fe, guests can walk a
labyrinth. Walking through the circular design of a labyrinth is
an ancient practice used by some faiths for contemplation,
prayer, and centering the spirit. Because of it's relaxing and
stress-relieving advantages, some hospitals and universities
have also used them to help with peace and relaxation...to
"unwind the mind".
Upon posting this video of my labyrinth walk, someone
commented that I sure was walking fast! I had good reason.
Although we didn't capture the lightning on the video, I was in
a hurry to get out of that dramatic desert storm!
